Top Tips for Working Remotely as a New Employee

5 simple tips to work from home

Need 5 simple tips to work from home? Whether you’re a new employee working remote, or like thousands of workers who were forced remote over the last year, we know working remote is going to be a big part of many jobs now and in the future.

COVID-19 changed the way we work, how we work and where we work. Here is Gracie’s take and tips on working remote as a new employee at RED66.

Get Yourself into a Routine and Get Ready for the Day

Since life has turned pretty virtual, it’s become a lot easier to just roll out of bed and start working. Face it, we’ve all been there!

However, I’ve found that creating a morning routine has dramatically helped my productivity throughout the day. I’ve always been a firm believer in the saying, “look good, feel good, perform good."

When you look and feel your best, your confidence goes up and your mindset for the day is set and ready to go. I would highly recommend to anyone working from home, take a little bit of extra time in the morning and get yourself ready for the day.

Your whole mindset about the day becomes positive and trust me, you’ll rock the day and be proud when it’s done.

Create a Workspace You Can Be Creative & Productive

Working from home can have a lot more distractions than being in an actual office, so your workspace needs to be a bit of a sanctuary.

With creating social media, I need to have my creative juices flowing all the time and creativity is hard to come by when you don’t feel comfortable in the space you’re working.

So, my advice would be to experiment a little with where you feel you can do your best work. Some days it might be the floor of your bedroom and other days it might be outside on the patio.

Regardless of where you decide to work, make sure it’s somewhere you feel empowered to do your best.

Know When It’s Time to Take a Break

Taking breaks is, and will always be, okay. If you feel stumped, unfocused or even just bored, get up and move around a little bit. Get away from your work for a few minutes to clear your head. Knowing when it’s time to take a break is the key!

Pay attention to your productivity and how you’re feeling. Of course, they don’t need to be scheduled breaks (unless that works for you) because some days you might be on a really good roll and not want to stop.

But other days, you will need a few minutes to get up, change your scenery, and refresh your mind and that is 100 percent okay.

Write a Daily To-Do List

Writing down a daily to-do list is probably the most impactful tip I use. Notice how I said a daily to-do list?

Everyone keeps some sort of “to-do” list for themselves, but I always grab a sticky note and write down what I want to complete on that particular day. I find it much less overwhelming than having a massive to-do list.

And I strongly encourage crossing each task off with a pen or pencil once you complete it. This may sound a little ridiculous, but the visual aspect of crossing something off a list is extremely rewarding.

Then, once you complete your daily tasks you can look at your list and think, “wow, I did that.” See? Rewarding.

Ask Questions and Stay in Contact with Coworkers!

Whenever you start a new job, it can be a little intimidating asking questions. You don’t want to bother your coworkers or ask a “dumb” question.

Truth is, there’s no dumb questions and in order for you to learn you need to ask questions! Don’t be afraid to ask because your coworkers/ boss want to hear from you, especially when working remotely. So, stay in contact as best you can!

Our team utilizes a lot of different communication options and tools to support our remote work. We use G suite with chats with each other and as a group, we collaborate on Google Docs, and use Asana for project management. We are all connected to one another.

Add in weekly team meetings and other 1 on 1 sessions, and it’s like we’re as close to being together as we can, even though we have team members throughout Michigan and Indiana.
